Phyllostachys nigra var. aureo variegata
This plant is used for as a feature plant, very popular and is native to Hunan China. It is a perennial plant that will grow up to 3m tall and spread up to 5m over a time span of 10 years. It likes full shade to full sun with a well-draining soil, water once a week in summer as well as feeding once every month. When planting place in a sheltered spot, hardy down to -15C possibly more, in winter if it's a very harsh winter leaves can be damaged but will recover. Can be used as a pot plant and is not fragrant. This bamboo is known for its jet black culms (canes) once matured as well as that amazing variegation. Bamboos do flower but only once and then die (monocarpic) depending on species depends on their flowering time, and they vary, for example, Phyllostachys edulis flowers every 40-50 years where as Fargesia murielae flowers every 120 years.
